Samburu National Reserve

Samburu National Reserve is a beautiful and rugged wildlife reserve in northern Kenya, covering 165 square kilometers (64 square miles) along the Ewaso Ng’iro River. It is located in Samburu County, about 350 km (217 miles) from Nairobi, and offers a unique safari experience with rare wildlife, stunning landscapes, and rich cultural heritage.

Unique Wildlife – The Samburu “Special Five”

Samburu is famous for its rare, northern-adapted animals, known as the “Samburu Special Five”:

Grevy’s zebra is larger and has thinner stripes than common zebras.
Reticulated giraffe – Beautifully patterned with geometric markings.
Beisa oryx – A striking antelope with long, straight horns.
Somali ostrich – A unique blue-necked ostrich.
Gerenuk – A long-necked antelope that stands on its hind legs to eat leaves.

It is also home to the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino) and other wildlife like cheetahs, crocodiles, hyenas, and wild dogs.

Ewaso Ng’iro River – A Lifeline for Wildlife

The Ewaso Ng’iro River flows through the park, attracting large herds of elephants and other animals.
